Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST)

This contains Reflections, Evidence, and Experiences on the various Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers (PPST) Domains. Including important problems encountered while conducting Remote Teaching and how I overcame them.

Domain 1 - Content Knowledge and Pedagogy:

  1. Content knowledge and its application within and across curriculum areas

  2. Research-based knowledge and principles of teaching and learning

  3. Positive use of ICT

  4. Strategies for promoting literacy and numeracy

  5. Strategies for developing critical and creative thinking, as well as other higher-order thinking skills

  6. Mother Tongue, Filipino and English in teaching and learning

  7. Classroom communication strategies

Teaching students can be challenging yet rewarding. As a teaching intern, I can say that teachers are truly role models for the students. They impact the lives of each one of them with their knowledge and skills. During my pre-demo, I never imagined it would be as difficult as I had anticipated. The lesson plan, resources, and other tools that will be utilized in class should all be prepared ahead of time. Your objectives should be met, and the activities should provide students an idea of what your topic is about and how well they grasp the issue being presented. As teaching interns, we are instructed to use three languages: English, Filipino, and our own tongue, because it is an effective method of instruction.

Based on my experiences, teachers should be adaptable and well-equipped with the knowledge and skills to adapt to changes in the learning environment. Teachers will not only teach the topic that they have learned; there may be times when the school will assign them to a new subject, and so as a teacher, you should be prepared when this occurs. It is difficult to be a teacher, but these difficulties can be turned into opportunities that will assist us in becoming an effective teacher teaching a quality education.

Domain 2 - Learning Environment:

  1. Learner safety and security

  2. Fair learning environment

  3. Management of classroom structure and activities

  4. Support for learner participation

  5. Promotion of purposive learning

  6. Management of learner behavior

Each teacher prioritizes learner safety and security. With the ongoing crisis, we are all forced to stay at home and be safe and healthy, but educators are all expected to go to school to deliver quality education. For some teachers, the modular approach had become a new learning style. Some are using the online way. This shift in learning style is a significant problem for all teachers. They must still provide knowledge and skills while also ensuring that no one falls behind. They must promote and urge students to adopt the new normal learning structure.

Throughout my teaching internship, teachers put through a lot of effort, patience, and sacrifice for each student. Making modules, monitoring learners' progress, adapting to changes in the learning environment, and, most importantly, ensuring that a quality education is provided to generate competent learners.

Domain 3 - Diversity of Learners:

  1. Learners’ gender, needs, strengths, interests and experiences

  2. Learners’ linguistic, cultural, socio-economic and religious backgrounds

  3. Learners with disabilities, giftedness and talents

  4. Learners in difficult circumstances

  5. Learners from indigenous groups

Diverse learners represent a diverse range of abilities, communities, backgrounds, and learning styles. Regardless of ethnicity, disability, gender, age, sexual orientation, or religion, we are tasked to respect one another. Schools should promote gender equality and provide opportunities for children to study and demonstrate their own abilities, skills, or talents because we never know what they are capable of. Giving each student a quality education can help them develop their individual characteristics and attributes.

Teachers in the new mode of learning are adaptable and open to change, especially when it comes to accommodating learners from diverse backgrounds with differing learning needs. Understanding and valuing student diversity, paying attention to them, and encouraging them to be sensitive at all times. Teachers must also become aware of learner variability and variations in order to develop and administer a teaching session that is welcoming and accommodating to all students.

Domain 4 - Curriculum and Planning:

  1. Planning and management of teaching and learning process

  2. Learning outcomes aligned with learning competencies

  3. Relevance and responsiveness of learning programs

  4. Professional collaboration to enrich teaching practice

  5. Teaching and learning resources including ICT

Planning is essential in teaching since it enables learning progression in topic learning as well as overall curricular competencies. It ensures that all students benefit from the curriculum and that the key learning areas' material is taken into account. Making a lesson plan often includes the goal of what students should learn, how the goal will be realized in terms of delivery and procedure, and a technique for determining how well the goal was fulfilled. In this, teachers can be more productive in the classroom. Furthermore, effective classroom management strategies can also help to create a relevant learning environment for both the teacher and the student.

In today's world, technology may be a huge assistance to teachers, especially when it comes to creating lesson plans and other learning materials. All through my practice teaching internship, I saw that practically all of the teachers are technically minded, which can make their duties easier. They can quickly record, monitor, and contact learners. Technology has brought about improvements in our lives such as time savings, quick connection and interaction, improved quality of life, and easy access to knowledge, and education.

Domain 5 - Assessment and Reporting:

  1. Design, selection, organization and utilization of assessment strategies

  2. Monitoring and evaluation of learner progress and achievement

  3. Feedback to improve learning

  4. Communication of learner needs, progress and achievement to key stakeholders

  5. Use of assessment data to enhance teaching and learning practices and programs

When it comes to assessment and reporting, this is critical to the student's growth, knowledge, comprehension, and abilities. Seeing how my cooperating teacher handled assessing each student, needing to monitor them in their schoolwork and obligations, and evaluating the students' development. He always makes time to contact them, whether online or through their parents. He employs a variety of tactics to ensure that students receive a high-quality education and make progress in their learning every quarter.

This strategy can serve as a valuable source of information regarding students' learning, guiding students to grasp their misconceptions and using the information to develop new learning goals.

Domain 6 - Community Linkages and Professional Engagement:

  1. Establishment of learning environments that are responsive to community contexts

  2. Engagement of parents and the wider school community in the educative process

  3. Professional ethics

  4. School policies and procedures

Setting up a healthy and well-organized learning environment can assist students and teachers in creating a calm learning atmosphere. As a future educator, developing relationships with local government units, parents, alumni, businesses, or private persons can help learners succeed more in school, stay longer, and enjoy their time as students. Faculty members who have strong community ties are more motivated to educate and can offer more possibilities to students. As the old proverb goes, "it takes a village to raise a child."

Furthermore, teachers must communicate with other people and organizations in a professional manner, given that there is a code of conduct that serves as the foundation for establishing required norms of behavior for members of a profession.

Domain 7 - Personal Growth and Professional Development:

  1. Philosophy of teaching

  2. Dignity of teaching as a profession

  3. Professional links with colleagues

  4. Professional reflection and learning to improve practice

  5. Professional development goals

When you become a teacher, you will be shaping future generations through the curriculum you create and the personal wisdom you transmit. You'll have the capacity to teach both essential topics and life lessons. This means you'll be the one to help them learn interpersonal skills, goal setting, disciplinary procedures, self-care, and commitment. When it comes down to it, teaching is much more than a means of earning a living. Being a teacher involves making a difference in the lives of students and molding them into the individuals they will become through life lessons.
